London Hydro is seeking a dynamic engineer to enhance its Engineering & Operations team. The ideal candidate will be an innovative problem solver driven to acquire knowledge and demonstrate an eagerness to take ownership of diverse projects. Applying an analytical approach and sound judgment, the successful candidate will support the initiatives of talented people working in various departments.

The focus of this role will be the completion of a four-year training program designed to provide the Electrical Engineer in Training with a holistic comprehension of the local electricity distribution business. In addition to attending formal courses and completing self-study assignments, the successful candidate will be given the opportunity to complete rotations in the Design, Planning, Operations, and Standards departments.

JOB DUTIES

Specifically, in addition to the above functions, as an Electrical Engineer in Training, you will:

  • Contribute to cross-functional teams working together to optimize the electrical distribution system.
  • Leverage GIS, OMS, SCADA, Metering, IT, and other system analysis tools to assist with the development of advanced engineering solutions.
  • Assist with the analysis of long-term trends, emergency operational issues and reliability data, and make recommendations.  Assist with responding to inquiries and creating studies, estimates and documents pertaining to system planning, design and operations matters.
  • Prepare designs and submit to a Distribution Engineer for approval and stamping.  Contribute to the coordination of projects for the corporation’s capital investment plan.  Collaborate with Design and GIS staff during preparation of drawings and specifications.
  • Assist with the investigation and troubleshooting of protection and control matters, in both field and office settings.
  • Assist with the preparation of supporting documentation for regulatory and budgetary submissions.
  • Assist with the maintenance of existing construction standards and specifications for equipment.  Assist with consultation with vendors and manufacturing representatives to investigate the availability of new products and equipment, with the preparation of purchasing specifications, and the development and maintenance of equipment standards and specifications, delivering all proposed changes to a Distribution Engineer for review/approval.
  • Liaise with consultants, developers, contractors and customers regarding new load and generation developments.
  • Participate in a variety of projects, tours, experiences and field work to build a solid portfolio of skills in the electrical utility field.
  • Use strong oral, written, presentation and interpersonal skills to achieve goals.
  • Participate in professional and technical organizations related to electrical utilities (EDA, CSA, etc).
  • Adhere to all Occupational Health & Safety Act rules and regulations, the IHSA EUS rule book, London Hydro work practices and London Hydro’s Health & Safety Management System.
  • Perform other duties related to the above job purpose.

 

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

The qualified Electrical Engineer in Training we seek will be able to meet the following requirements:

  • Successful completion of a Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering from a PEO recognized university.
  • Valid Driver’s License Class G
  • The proficient use of personal computer and various software packages including Word, Excel and PowerPoint, along with various Engineering & Operations solutions.
  • Strong leadership, management, communication, presentation, project management and interpersonal skills.
