We are looking for a MEARIE/IHSA or equivalent Powerline Technician with their Certificate of Qualification. We also welcome applications from motivated third —or fourth-year apprentices eager to advance their careers or individuals who possess the minimum qualifications.
As a Powerline Maintainer, you will work under the direction of a Line Supervisor to build, rebuild, inspect, test, repair, modify and maintain all overhead electrical distribution lines and associated apparatus.
JOB DUTIES
As part of your responsibilities as a Powerline Maintainer, these are some of the main job duties:
- Work live voltages with live line tools hands-on and/or appropriate protective equipment on energized circuits up to 27.6 KV.
- Install, replace, maintain and remove all overhead transmission and distribution power lines and associated equipment. Obtain personal work protection. Perform traffic control.
- Inspect electrical installations performed by outside contractors.
- Construct and maintain various apparatus as per manufacturer's and engineering standards.
- Interpret blueprints and drawings.
- Assist in the training of apprentices.
- Drive and/or operate bucket trucks, radial boom derricks, tension machines, hydraulic equipment and all other equipment and tools used in line maintenance and construction, at times in close proximity to energized lines and high-voltage equipment. Perform daily dielectric tests and vehicle inspections.
- Work standby duty on a designated schedule and occasional shifts.
QUALIFICATIONS
In order to be considered, you must meet the following requirements:
- Successful completion of Grade 12, or equivalent.
- Class G Driver’s License (a driver's license and an ability to drive are required in order to discharge the essential duties of the position).
- Due to the nature of this role, from time to time, it may be necessary for you to perform planned or unplanned overtime work outside of your normal/scheduled working hours, and such overtime work is an essential requirement of this position (subject to the requirements of the applicable collective agreement). It is the expectation of London Hydro that you will respond to its calls and requests for assistance.
By the end of the apprenticeship, as a Powerline Maintainer you must also:
- Successfully complete the MEARIE/IHSA or equivalent Powerline Technician Certificate of Qualification.
- Obtain Driver's License: Restricted A with Z endorsement (a driver's license and ability to drive is required in order to discharge the essential duties of the position).
- Complete Utility Work Protection Code, O. Reg 22/04, and IHSA Electric Utility Safety Rules training.
- Complete Rubber Glove Techniques to 36KV training.
- Must reside within 30 minutes of the London Hydro service territory while working standby duty.

JOB DESCRIPTION
TITLE: POWERLINE MAINTAINER
DEPARTMENT: LINE
PURPOSE OF POSITION:
Under the direction of the Line Supervisor, or designate, build, rebuild, inspect, test, repair, modify and maintain all overhead electrical distribution lines and associated apparatus.
JOB DUTIES:
- Work live voltages with live line tools hands on and/or appropriate protective equipment on energized circuits up to 27.6 KV.
- Install, replace, maintain and remove all overhead transmission and distribution power lines (of all classes and voltages) and associated equipment (e.g. poles, conductor, guy wires, aerial transformers, air-break switches, and ground grids, including pre-wiring and presetting transformer banks and taps). Perform ground work at job site. Dig holes by hand when necessary.
- Obtain personal work protection hold offs. Perform traffic control.
- Apply, remove and transport single phase and watt/hour meters following ISO certification procedures.
- Carry out switching instructions and apply for and hold work permits when necessary.
- Climb poles using spurs when necessary.
- Use various pieces of test equipment.
- Inspect electrical installations performed by outside contractors.
- Refer customer inquiries and complaints to appropriate person.
- Complete paperwork (e.g. tailboards, driving logs, timesheets, traffic plans). Requisition material.
- Construct and maintain various apparatus as per manufacturer's and engineering standards.
- Interpret blueprints and drawings.
- Assist other departments with both scheduled and emergency work as required.
- Assist in the training of apprentices, learners and temporary employees.
- Drive and/or operate bucket trucks, radial boom derricks, tension machines, hydraulic equipment and all other equipment and tools used in line maintenance and construction, at times in close proximity to energized lines and high voltage equipment. Perform daily dielectric tests and vehicle inspections. Perform regular preventive maintenance on tools, vehicles and equipment including live line tools.
- Work from aerial devices on a regular basis.
- Work with hazardous materials on a regular basis.
- Work requires heavy physical effort on a regular basis
- Work in close proximity to heavy traffic on a regular basis.
- Work standby duty on a designated schedule and occasional shifts.
- Adhere to all Occupational Health & Safety Act rules and regulations, the IHSA E&US rule book and London Hydro work practices.
- Report all injuries and near misses immediately to your Supervisor, or designate.
- Perform all activities in a manner that protects the health and safety of yourself and others.
- Wear all personal protective equipment as required.
- Understand and comply with the London Hydro Environmental, Health and Safety Policy.
- Perform other duties related to the above job purpose.
EDUCATION REQUIRED: Successful completion of Grade 12 PLUS specialized trades training or equivalent.
